

The Department of Bengali began its journey in 1959 with the Three Year Degree Course in Bengali. Later, B.A. Three Year Honours in Bengali was introduced in the year 1963 under the affiliation of The University of Burdwan. From its inception, the Department experienced the incorporation of students from various socio-economic backgrounds and most of them were/are first generation learners. The Department offers Core Courses in Bengali Classical and Modern Literature. Postcolonial Literature, Partition Literature mainly in the eastern part of India, Popular Literature, Translation Studies, Academic Writing etc. The faculty members regularly conduct student-teacher meetings beyond the sphere of regular curriculum. The Department conducts Students’ Seminars and Invited Lectures. At present, there are six faculty members in the Department. During the post Covid period, the Department has continued with the blended mode of learning and extensive use of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) to make learning more attractive and presentable to the students. To cater to the students individually, the Department has a separate staffroom with Laptop, Desktop and a Departmental Library with reference books. The Department has made extensive use of the digital platforms and has successfully encouraged the students to build up their technical know-how, which would immensely benefit them in the long run. At the same time teacher-student interaction in the classroom and on a one-to-one basis interaction in staffroom becomes the strong point of the Department.
